Hey Kids, Stealing Video Games is Not Cool

By Alex Chen | January 01, 0001

It seems like it should go without saying, but commenter CornflakeJustice felt like saying it anyway, and since this is Speak Up on Kotaku and not sit quietly and say nothing on Kotaku, here we are. When did it become cool to pirate games? Lately, I’ve been noticing a lot of people outright admitting to pirating games [[link]] as though they did something good. I understand the desire to have a chance to demo the game first and demos that are representative of games are getting harder and harder to find. I respect that for a PC gamer especially pirating it long enough to get a feel for the [[link]] game can be a way of deciding if your money is worth spending.(new Image()).src = rummy golds 'https://capi.connatix.com/tr/si?token=995c4c7d-194f-4077-b0a0-7ad466eb737c&cid=872d12ce-453b-4870-845f-955919887e1b'; cnx.cmd.push(function() { cnx({ playerId: "995c4c7d-194f-4077-b0a0-7ad466eb737c" }).render("79703296e5134c75a2db6e1b64762017"); }); What I don’t understand is the PC or Console gamers that pirates a game so they can play the ENTIRE GAME without paying, it’s not fair to me someone who works nearly 60 hours a week to pay my bills and have some left over for games. It’s not fair to the developer that put hundreds of hours into developing a game. Hell it’s not fair to the publisher who spent thousands sometimes millions on putting a game into your hands. I’m [[link]] tired of hearing people whine about DRM and the practice of bundling day one DLC or other initiatives to encourage people to actually BUY the game in one breath and the next brag about how they pirated last month’s awesome game, or complain about one publisher or their games or another in one breath and in the next talk about having pirated that same publisher’s game as though the publisher deserves it. So stop it. Seriously. You want our hobby and entertainment to grow up and evolve? To still be there in 10, 20, 50 years? Then start treating it with respect and actively engage with the community and culture we have in our fellow gamers and the teams, artists, and even businessmen. We’re all in this together. About Speak Up on Kotaku: Our readers have a lot to say, and sometimes what they have to say has nothing to do with the stories we run. That’s why we have a forum on Kotaku called Speak Up. That’s the place to post anecdotes, photos, rummy mars game tips and hints, and anything you want to share with Kotaku at rummy master large. Every weekday we’ll pull one of the best Speak Up posts we can find and highlight it here.
